Passage Planning

Passage Planning is a concise e-learning module on voyage planning safely from berth to berth, espacially written for crews of workboats. It follows the four phases of IMO Resolution A.893(21) and turns the regulations into a practical routine you can use on every passage.

The content of this e-learning is based on Passage Planning Explained, a Practice Guide written and published by the Workboat Association.

What you’ll learn

• Regulation: what SOLAS Chapter V, the STCW Code and national rules require, and why they matter
• Appraisal: checks on the vessel and crew, sources of information, and how to judge whether a harbour or berth is safe
• Planning: plotting the route, safety margins, under keel clearance and squat, tides, traffic, environmental measures, contingencies and the point of no return
• Execution and monitoring: when to postpone a stage, position fixing, keeping a log, and revising the plan
• Implementation: making passage planning a consistent habit on board

The module has seven chapters, including a chapter with a final assessment to confirm understanding.
