Use of Tugs in Firefighting

Ship fires remain one of the most dangerous incidents at sea, threatening lives, the environment, and global trade. With over 200 reported fire incidents in 2023 alone, the need for effective marine firefighting has never been more urgent.

Polestar Publishing is proud to have contributed to the release of the ‘BTA Guide on the Use of Tugs in Firefighting’: a vital new guide focused on the deployment of firefighting tugs.

Tugs equipped with firefighting systems play a critical role, not just at sea, but also in ports, rivers, and lakes. Whether directly fighting fires or serving as platforms for emergency crews, their effectiveness hinges on two factors: capable equipment and, more importantly, expert crews. Firefighting is far more complex than simply spraying water. Effective tug deployment requires trained crews who can act quickly and safely across various scenarios. Regular training, equipment checks, and close coordination with other responders are essential.

This Guide addresses key areas including legal frameworks, crew training, risk management, and the growing challenge of fires involving alternative fuels like lithium-ion batteries. It also explores past incidents to extract lessons and improve future responses.

Ultimately, the Guide is a living document: one that will evolve with advancing technology, regulation, and maritime practices. But at its heart, it affirms a timeless truth:  firefighting depends not just on powerful tools, but on the skill, readiness, and cooperation of the people who use them.
